Holiday Weekend Haul!

It's official, laides- Summer is over! My school district always goes back the day after Labor Day, so the long weekend has always marked the true end of summer for me. Mom and I did a little shopping over the past few days, and I must say I got some pretty good deals- just thought I'd share some of them with you all! Enjoy!

Damask Print Tunic- $15 at Target
Wearing this for my first day of school tomorrow!

Basic black leggings- $8 at Target
I LIVE in these in the fall and winter!

Slatkin & Co. Cinnamon Sugared Donut 3-Wick Candle-
$10 (on sale 2 for $20) at Bath and Body Works
This smells exactly like a box of Krispy Kreme donuts!
Too bad they're not around here anymore.

Ralph by Ralph Lauren Holiday Box Set- $65 at Macy's
I decided it was finally time for "big girl perfume" and as soon as I smelled this, I fell in love- so fresh and clean smelling! And how cute is that packaging!?

Nike Dri-Fit Golf Cap- $9 at Marshall's
I love that the material of this cap wicks away sweat but still looks like cotton!

Hope your holiday weekend was a great one!

My Fall Fashion Must-Haves!

Wow. This is my first post in over a week- so sorry ladies! It's been a hectic week, and tomorrow I'm headed off to the beach for a few days so I won't be posting much this week either (although I'm thinking of leaving a scheduled post...), but here's a little something I've been wanting to do for a while:

August is officially upon us. While some of us have over a month left and some just a few weeks, it is an undeniable fact that Summer 2011 will soon come to a close. But don't fret, because that just means my absolute favorite season is just around the corner: Autumn! There are so many things I love about Autumn- the crisp air and chilly weather, Halloween, going to a local orchard with friends, getting back into a school schedule, and, of course, getting back into all my fall clothes!

Here are a few of my fall must-haves that every lady should have in her closet:

A black turtleneck
A long sleeve, black turtleneck is the perfect combination of function and fashion. Not only will it keep you toasty warm, but it super easy to accessorize. I love to wear it with a statement necklace or bright scarf, and the black will match practically any color you choose! I have some from Target that I love, and they're a steal at only about $10 each!

Leggings
Leggings are definitely a staple in my wardrobe- I probably wear them more than I wear jeans or jeggings. They keep your legs warmer and are more comfortable with jeans. They look great with tons of different types of shoes, from flats to boots to pumps. I buy mine at Modell's because I've found that athletic leggings look and fit very similiar to the ones you'd find in a clothing store, but are so much more durable.

Jeggings
So many people hate on leggings, but I have to say I am a believer. I actually find jeans really uncomfortable, so jeggings give me the look of wearing jeans, but I end up being much more comfortable. Don't get me wrong, some are hideous- too much legging, not enough jean, but I've found that the secret to the perfect jegging is for them to be just a little more jean than legging. I love the pair that I got from Target, and at only $20, you can't go wrong!

Little Black Flats
Black flats are like the infamous "little black dress", but for your feet. They're a super versatile, classic way to complete almost any outfit, and definitely a go-to in my wardrobe. I actually wore out my last pair after only 2 seasons because I wore them so much, but I just scooped up the ones pictured above ( Sperry Top-Sider Women's Ashby Flat) at DSW and I cannot wait to wear them!

Cardigans
Cardigans are a super easy way to mix up your wardrobe. Layering one over a shirt automatically adds more depth and interest to your outfit, without bulking you up. They're also a great way to extend your clothes over multiple seasons- take your favorite summer tank, throw a cardigan over it, and you're set for a crisp fall day! A black one is pretty much a staple since it will go with practically anything, but don't be afraid to mix it up with other colors- I have  pink ones, blue ones, purple ones, etc. and I've found they add an awesome pop of color over a dark top!

Feelin' Thrifty?

You may or may not know at this point that I am a creature of the large, predominantly female species know as shoppers. I love the feeling of finding something that I've been coveting, or even something out of the blue that I immediately fall in love with! And while I could undoubtedly spend hours at the mall (and I usually do- our mall is huge.), I'm also a teenager with a fairly small budget. This, along with what I like to think of as a natural instinct for bargain hunting, forces me to get creative in my shopping process. One of my favorite ways to get more and better items for less is to frequent thrift stores. When a lot of people think of thrift shopping, they think of musty, dirty, outdated items from stores that aren't in much better condition. Although this is sometimes the case, it is not always true, and there are many fabulous items to be found! So, without further adieu, here are my top tips for thrifty shopping!

1. Find the right store for you
Chances are, there are several thrift stores in your area. Many hospitals have their own, some benefit specific charities, and some are free-standing. Check out all the ones you can find, because they are not all created equal. Some are cleaner than others, and some have more desirable items. The trick is to find the store that works best for what you're looking for. The ideal store is clean, well-stocked, and fairly up-to date. Location is also key. A store's inventory typically reflects the area that it is in and the population its items come from- i.e. stores that are in more affluent areas typically pull from a more upscale crowd and vice versa. However, you may not be able to settle on just one. For example, my mom and I like for furniture, one for jewelry, and one for clothing. This brings me to my next tip...

2. Don't just look for clothes
Most thrift stores don't limit themselves to clothes, and neither should you! There are all different types of unique jewelry, furniture, home decor items, accessories, etc. to be found, so keep an open mind when it comes to looking for less obvious items.

3. Be a discerning shopper
Once you've found something that strikes your fancy, make sure to give it a once over (or twice over) and inspect it for rips, tears, stains, cracks, etc. depending on what the item is. However, keep in mind that many small tears (especially those along seams and hemlines) can easily be mended, either by your or by a tailor. Also, don't rule out items if they are simply in need of minor alterations (darts, raising a hemline, etc), as the price of the item plus the cost of alterations will most likely still be fairly low.

4. Stick to brand names
This is not a "rule" per se, but more of a personal practice of mine when it comes to thrift shopping. Most thrift stores have a mix of brand-name and non brand-name clothing. However, the difference in price between the two is usually minimal, if anything. So doesn't it make the most sense to go for a higher end piece from a brand that you know and trust rather than something random? This rule especially applies to basics. Say I'm looking for a white polo, and I find one that is from Ralph Lauren, and one that is from a store like Target, WalMart, etc. Obviously (although I have NO problem shopping the latter), I'm going to pick the Ralph Lauren because: A. I'd be paying about the same amount either way, and B. The difference in price between the non brand-name piece at the thrift store and a brand new one from a store is probably not very large. Of course, there are always exceptions to this, such as finding an absolutely fab one of a kind piece.

5. Know what NOT to buy
There are some items that simply should not be purchased used/previously worn. These include bathing suits, undergarments, shoes, hats, and hair accessories.

6. Keep a positive attitude
It is important to realize that, even at your ideal thrift store, the stock is not always the same. Therefore, there might be trips (even several in a row) where you do not find anything you like. Don't give up though- it's always worth it when you find something fabulous!

7. Make regular trips
To make the most of thrift store shopping, it is beneficial to make regular trips to your store to go through the inventory. I typically go thrift shopping about once every month or two.

8. Keep a budget.
Although items at thrift stores can often be very inexpensive, it is useful to know ahead of time what the most you will pay for an item is. This will help you avoid overpriced impulse buys that may not end up being worth the money.

Now that I have hopefully shared some helpful hints about thrift shopping, here are some of my most fabulous recent thrift store finds.
(Just to give you an idea of price, the most I paid for any of these items was $30, but most were around $10 and under.)

As I mentioned earlier, thrift store shopping shouldn't just be limited to clothing. It's a great way to find authentic, vintage pieces when decorating your home.

I actually bought the furniture in my bedroom from a thrift store

The style of my bedroom would probably be best described as vintage-preppy-glam, and this ornate furniture from the 1960's works perfectly against my pink and green color palette!

I got all of the items in this set (plus another being stored because it doesn't fit in my room) for just about $1000- an absolute steal for furniture that is solid wood and authentic to its period!

Happy Thrifting!

Vote for Me!

Right now, College Prep is hosting a
contest on her blog along with Vineyard Vines!

The prize is this adorable Lobster Beach tote
which is, of course, from Vineyard Vines:

To enter, I had to make a set on Polyvore centered around the tote,
using as many VV items as possible.

Here's what I came up with:
WholeHeartedlyHannah's Vineyard Vines Contest Entry!

Now, here's where you come in!

College Prep has posted all of the sets on her Facebook page, and the set that gets the most "likes" by July 8th wins!

If you all could just go over to her Facebook page (I even gave you a handy little link!) and give my set a "like" it would mean so much to me!

Thanks so much!

Wear Your Whites!

It's official: Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start is Summer, is less than TWO weeks away!

For us ladies (and men too!) it also means something else. Unless you live under a rock, you know the old rule that you should not wear white before Memorial Day, or after Labor Day. Basically, white is a summer-only color.

In honor of this classic rule of fashion, I found some gorgeous whites appropriate for any and every fabulous occasion you may have this summer!

This dress would be wonderful to wear to brunch or luncheon. The a-line skirt will flatter any body type, and the delicate embroidery adds a touch of luxury to this classic dress.

This lightweight shift dress is perfect for the office on a hot summer day. The short sleeves and high neckline keep it office appropriate, while the linen fabric keeps you nice and cool. A grosgrain belt around the waist adds definition and a little bit of contrast.

These long, relaxed fitting shorts would be great for everything from running errands to relaxing by the pool, and the subtle stripes add just a pinch of prep!

This light loose sweater will be perfect for keeping the chills at bay on lazy, long, summer nights.

These versatile sandals are a preppy staple that would complete almost any outfit!

What are your white summer staples?

Fabulous Find Friday!

Just thought I'd share a few deals I've come across in the past few weeks:

A couple weeks ago, I went to a Tanger Outlets location. It was my first time ever going to an outlet mall, so I really didn't know what to expect in terms of discounts. I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised! Here's what I came home with:

I love J. Crew's flip flops, so when I saw these, I knew I had to scoop them up! The critter flip flops were priced at about $15 and the braided ones about $20, and THEN each was about an additional 25% off, so the two together ended up costing about $25!

There was really no good way to photograph this. No matter where I put my hand, the flash reflected!

I found this cute, simple ring in the Coach outlet. I'd forget to wear jewelry if I had to put it on every morning, so I try to have jewelry that I never have to take off (i.e. sterling silver) and that goes with most outfits. The ring was priced at $49, but that day they gave out coupons for 25% off your entire purchase, so I ended up paying just under $40!

A couple days ago I paid a visit to my local Junior League thrift shop. I've found some great pieces there in the past and they have a good selection of high end items, so I make it a point to stop in every once in a while to check out what's there. They almost always have a few Lilly Pulitzer items in the window, but on this particular day I was excited to see an entire rack of Lilly! (They also had a smaller rack of little girls' clothing- for Lilly Lovers in training!) As I perused the rack, I found this:

I was so excited when I tried this blouse on and it fit perfectly! I loved that I could tie the sash right under my bust as I've found that most shirts like this are meant to be tied at the waist, whether it be because of pre-placed belt loops, where darts are placed, etc. However, this top has neither of those, so I can tie the bow just under my bust, which I find to be the most flattering on me. Plus, the cap sleeves and bright floral print are just adorable! The top was priced at at mere $15- basically, a COMPLETE steal!

Have a wonderful weekend!
